We stay busy and are on the go a lot in the summer whether it’s playing baseball, camping, swimming, or traveling. Some days we are running from one activity to another without much time between.

With all the traveling we do and chaperoning from activities, I feel like we live out of the car some days. If  you’ve got kids, you know that scrapes, messes, cries of I’m hungry and thirsty, and a myriad of other things are bound to happen at some point during the summer months. I like to be prepared as much as possible for whatever may happen.

I need something that will save me time, keep everyone happy, and help us enjoy our summer to the fullest. I put together a car kit for the car early in the summer every year that contains items we might need while out and about or traveling. It makes the outings and travel much smoother when I can go to the back of the car and pull out what I need.

Putting your DIY Summer Car Kit together:

Start off with a container large enough to hold all of your items. We opted for two plastic containers: a smaller container for the food items and a larger container for everything else.

Print the labels on a 8 1/2″x 11 labels paper, cut down to size using scissors or a paper trimmer and add to the outside of your containers.

Start off by filling your summer car kit with these basic items and then add items that fit your family’s needs. For example, when our kids were younger, I included extra diapers and swim diapers.

  • Plates
  • Cups
  • Utensils
  • Paper towels
  • Toilet paper
  • Small trash bags
  • Bug spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Wipes
  • Hand santizer
  • First aid kit
  • Bottled water
  • Rain poncho
  • Food
