My kids had a three day weekend this weekend and when I mentioned this to my 2nd grader early Saturday morning he asked if we were going out of town.  Um no…I suggested we go camping instead.   He was really excited until I informed him that it would take place in our living room.  A quick reminder, that while we are having unseasonably warm temperatures it was still cold, convinced him that our living room would be the best place to pitch the tent.

Ideas for your indoor campout

  • Prepare your favorite campout foods for dinner and eat it picnic style next to your tent.  Our kids love cooking their own hot dogs over the fire.  Hot dogs are quick and easy to prepare whether you at home or at a campsite.
  • Make smores…my favorite part of camping…sticky gooey marshmallows and chocolate on a graham cracker.  Yum!  Sarah at Raining Hot Coupons offers an indoor smore recipe for the microwave that takes 15 seconds.  Tara Fuller posts on Greatist “9 Amazing Ways to Cook Smores Indoors” that includes smores on a stick, smore pancakes, and smore milkshakes.
  • Read a book or tell a story.  Right before the kids went to sleep we laid down in the tent with our flashlights and read  Flat Stanley Goes Camping .
