Favorite Hibernation Books

My kids have been fascinated by the idea of hibernation.  Why do animals hibernate? Do all animals hibernate? What animals hibernate?  How do animals hibernate? 

We have turned to books to answer these questions.  Here’s some of our favorite hibernation books.

Bear Snores On: This a favorite in our house. One by one, different animals find their way out of the cold and into Bear’s cave to warm up. 

Sleep, Black Bear, Sleep: Soothing bedtime story.  Whether slumber awaits in a warm bed, a rocking hammock, or a nest of leaves, the feeling of comfort and the infinite world of dreams are universal.  

Hibernation (Patterns in Nature): Introduction to hibernation; explaining how and why some animals prepare for and experience hibernation each year.

Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep!: Big Bear doesn’t hear very well. He thinks Old Man Winter has told him to drive a jeep, to sweep, and to leap.

Don’t Wake Up the Bear!: All kinds of animals sneak into bear’s cave while he is sleeping.  One finally wakes him with a sneeze.

Time to Sleep: Just like children, the forest animals do not settle down for their nap right away.

Over and Under the Snow: Great nonfiction book exploring the subnivean zone and the tunnels and caves formed beneath the snow and over the ground, where many kinds of animals live through the winter, hidden beneath the snow.

Scholastic Reader Level 2: Hibernation: Learn about the different animals that hibernate and how they prepare for hibernation.

Hibernation Station: Soothing and rhyming book introducing kids to different types of hibernating animals.
