Today we are joining Playdough & Popsicles for an A-Z Craft Series. Our letter is the letter “B” and we chose an inexpensive, easy, and fun Bear Kid Craft.
We have been reading and talking a lot about hibernation and this craft fits perfect with our discussions. My kids are fascinated with hibernation and what animals hibernate and how. You can find some of the books we have been reading here.
This is a very inexpensive, low prep project. We had all the supplies on hand for this, because we do a lot of paper plate crafts and animal puppets with paper bags. We purchase both the paper plates and paper bags (you could also use your paper bags from the grocery store) at the Dollar Tree for a $1 each and we can do tons of projects from them both. Grab your scissors, glue stick, and a scrap piece of black paper and you are ready to craft.

Supplies:
Cost: Under $1.00
- Paper plate
- Brown paper bag
- Black card stock or construction paper
- Glue stick
- Scissors
Directions:
Kids as young as toddlers can complete this craft. Tearing paper is really good for toddlers to help them build the small muscles in their hands.
- Tear or cut small pieces from a paper bag.
- Using a glue stick, glue pieces to the back side of a paper plate.
- Cut out eyes, nose, and mouth and glue on top of the glued paper bag pieces. I free handed the mouth, but used one of my favorite circle crafts punches to make the nose and eyes. I use my smaller circle craft punches all the time!
- Cut ears from the paper bag and glue to the top of the plate.
Learning & Development:
It’s fun to do crafts just for the fun of it, but many times there is a little learning and development that can be done while crafting; often without the kids even knowing.
- Fine motor skills: Whether you choose to cut the paper or tear the paper, this project works on building the small muscles in their hands that later will be needed to hold a pencil and write.
- Hibernation craft-Read one of these hibernation books with the craft or one of our favorite books: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
- Recycle/re-purpose craft-We used a paper lunch bag, but this is a great opportunity to raid the recycle bin for your paper grocery store bags.
- Letter B craft
- Color Brown-This is a great opportunity to talk about the color brown with your toddlers and preschoolers. As preschoolers, the color brown was always my kids’ weakness color.
